Webdesk, TNI Banarhat, 27th December, 2016: Today road blockade was staged by the Tea garden laborers of Totapara Tea Garden at NH-31C at Banarhat in protest of the remuneration stoppage due to demonetization. The blockade lasted 1.5 hours after which the Tea Garden Manager and Police intervened and assured to take necessary measures on the issue. Due to the road blockade, there was a huge jam in the National Highway. Laborer leader Dhan Bahadur Chettri and Tilak Chettri informed TNI that for the last 3 fortnight’s remuneration of the laborers was due and the laborers appealed to the garden management repeatedly for releasing the same, but with negative results. On the other hand the manager of the tea garden Mr. S. S. Mallik informed TNI that the Garden has enough money but not in cash. This had led to the problem. However, at this moment the District Administration is providing the remuneration from their account. The Garden administration is depositing the amount to their account. He assured that the problem will be solved within few days. It is to be noted that almost all the labor unions participated in the road blockade today.
