Webdesk, TNI Guwahati 8th June, 2016: Guwahati became the first city in India to select a mascot of its own. No other cities, including New Delhi or even the commercial capital Mumbai don’t have any such mascots. Last Monday Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration declared the Gangetic Dolphin as the official mascot of Assam’s state capital. In a press meet today the decision was announced. The Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan Mr. M Angamuthu talked with the press personnel saying that this little river dolphin is locally known as ‘Sihu’. Earlier there was a voting done by selecting this animal as the first choice. The others were Black Softshell Turtle (Bor Kaso) and Greater Adjutant Stork (Hargila). Now, Guwahati has become the first city in the country to have its own ’city animal’. Greater Adjutant Stork got 18,454 votes and Black Softshell Turtle was the choice of 17,302 people. Sources said that at least 76 schools and colleges across Guwahati participated in the off-line voting. According to the last census, less than 2,000 Gangetic River Dolphins are said to be remaining in the Brahmaputra along Guwahati right now.
