Webdesk, TNI Jalpaiguri, 21st October, 2016: Today is the anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj, the first strategically organized combat force raised by the efforts of Netaji against British Government in India before Indian Independence. The Netaji Subhash Foundation of Jalpaiguri remembered the day with a small function in front of the Azad Hind Fauj Memorial Tomb at Jalpaiguri. However, the remembrance became more important when the foundation raised two important claims during the program. According to the foundation, the Azad Hind Fauj Tomb of Jalpaiguri is the first tomb in the country built in the memory of the jawans of Azad Hind Fauj. The secretary of the foundation Mr. Gobindo Roy on behalf of the foundation also claimed that the marble statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose located in front of the PWD building of Jalpaiguri is the first statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the country. Mr. Roy also claimed that the statue was founded by the freedom fighter, Satish Lahiri. Adding to the claims, according to Mr. Roy the ‘Asthi’ (Bones of the dead) of the soldiers are kept buried underneath the concerned Memorial tomb in Jalpaiguri. There were many other speakers in the program who also spoke in support of the claims made by the foundation. However, it will be interesting to see the after-effects of the same from various corners of the society and the concerned researchers in this arena.
