MAYHEM AT NAGRAKATA FOLLOWING DEATH IN POLICE CUSTODY

Webdesk, TNI Nagrakata, 18th September, 2016: today Nagarakata’s Sulkapara area came to a standstill when an elderly person died allegedly in police lock up. It is reported that today afternoon police arrested 6 people on charges of gambling from the area. Among them, the deceased Bhim Bahadur chettri (66) was also there. Later it was known that he died in police custody in the hospital of Sulkapara. After hearing this crowd started agitating at the block public Health centre. For quite some time the police were kept gheraoed by the crowd. An inspector and a civic volunteer were also injured by the stone pelting done by the angry mob. The family of the deceased alleged that Bhim Bahadur was just a spectator of the game but yet he was picked up by the police and beaten severely, resulting in his death in police custody. Police denied the charges and said that the person himself collapsed to the ground after he was nabbed. However, the family members said that there is marks o physical torture on Bhim Bahadur’s body. The Police superintendent of Jalpaiguri Mr. Amitabh Maiti, Addl Police super Mr. Bholanath Pande, the SDO of Malbazar Mr. Jyotirmoy Tanti and many other administrative officials immediately rushed to the spot to take control of the situation. The Police Super Mr. Nandi told the press that inter-departmental investigation will be taken to find out the actual incident.
