FALAKATA UNDER WATER: SITUATION GRIM

By Arunangshu Maitra (TNI Falakata)
Webdesk, TNI Falakata, 23rd June, 2016: Several villages in Falakata are flooded after a deluge of rain hit the region. Heavy rainfall in the different regions for the past several days has caused the level of water to increase in multiple rivers like the Torsha, Mujnai, Saptana, Jampai, Halong as well as in the irrigation canals. This overflow is the reason behind the flooding of the nearby region. Among the affected areas are Falakata, Deogaon, Mujhnai, Borodobri, Chuakhola, etc. The Subhaspally and Netaji Road in Falakata are under water. Water has entered several shops as well. The people in Falakata are battered as the clogged drainage refused to carry the excess water away. Known as the lifeline of the town, the Mujhnai River is responsible for the imminent condition as it has turned the area into an unannounced dumping ground, believe the experts. Continuous rain in the hills accounted for the recent swelling of rain-fed rivers like Teesta, Torsha, Sangkosh, Raidak, Mujhnai, etc. Several regions in Alipurduar, Coach Behar and Jalpaiguri have presented a similar scenario. Meanwhile, agitation among the masses has been reported in the absence of proper relief in the affected areas. Reportedly, the administration has been investigating the issue. The flood victims have taken refuge at a safe distance on their own. If the rains continue for another 24-hour, the situation will take a turn for the worst said the local people.
