‘JAAMAI SASTI’ SHOOTS FISH PRICE UP IN SILIGURI MARKETS
By R. Subrata (TNI Siliguri)
Webdesk, TNI Siliguri 9th June, 2016: Jaamai Sasti Bazar of Siliguri was in full swing today. In tandem with the tradition, the fish price shot up like a rocket in this pre-Jaamai Sasti day. The most sought after Bangladeshi Hilsa was priced around Rs. 1600 to 1800 kgs, Knife fish (Chitol) was priced around Rs. 1000/Kg, Rohu (Rui) from Bihar was priced around Rs. 500 per kg etc.
The fruits like watermelon, apple, mango, litchi etc were also highly priced. The situation prevailed in Siliguri markets like Fuleshwari bazar, Gatebazar, NJP Station market, BBD Chawk market etc. Seeing which the Bengali father-in-laws (Sasur) had goose bumps especially those who were retired and have no other income. However, the day comes once in a year for them to welcome their Son-in-Laws (Jaamai), so they didn’t hesitate to buy. The only expectation from the Jamai’s is to keep the daughters of the Father-in-laws happily.
