HOOGHLY JAIL CLASH & FIRE: CONCERN ABOUT POET KAZI NAZRUL’S HERITAGE CELL

Webdesk, TNI Jalpaiguri, 31st August, 2015: Clashes erupted in Hooghly District Correctional home today. Police sources say that dreaded criminal Nepu Giri, who is also a prison inmate was supposed to be shifted to Dum Dum Central Correctional Home based on the directives of the court. When the news reached the faction of Nepu Giri followers (inmates), they started the clash. Props were torched, the home was ransacked and the jail staff beaten. Soon after, clashes started between the other factions in the jail especially another criminal Toton. At least, police forces of 5 police stations reached the spot to stop the situation to be more aggravated. 3 fire brigade engines controlled the fire.

Concerns of the security of the heritage the famous poet Nazrul Islam’s Cell have raised nervousness for the authorities. Till reports last came in, the condition of the concerned cell of the famous poet is yet to be known. It is to be noted that the great revolutionary poet of Bengal, Kazi Nazrul Islam was incarcerated in this solitary cell of Hooghly Jail as an ordinary prisoner from April 14, 1923 to June 17, 1923.
