NARROW LANES OF SILIGURI FACING ROAD CLOGGING PROBLEMS

TNI News Service (TNS)

Webdesk, TNI Siliguri, 19th July, 2015: Road clogging is a very old problem of Siliguri. The growing city is faced with this problem due to the accumulation of building materials like sand, stone chips, bricks etc. for a long time in various wards of the city especially the residential areas, where the lanes are very narrow. Though, there are provisions of lifting away of those materials by the SMC as a punishment to the offenders. However, those provisions have not been followed in a uniform way. Various instances are there in Subhashpally, Deshbandhupara, Bharatnagar, Rabindranagar and many more areas of Siliguri. Residents’ aren’t sure whom to inform about. According to a resident Khokon Chakraborty of Subhashpally, the main road of the area is often clogged by building material like sand and stones for a long period of time. A few days ago there was an accident of a school girl because she could not side way to an approaching car and instead was dashed with the car. This happened due to road clogging by sand kept by a local promoter”. TNI talked with Smt. Durga Singh, MMIC – Urban Health, Mother and Child Care, Parking about the problem. According to her “The problem has to be reported to the local ward master, who has the clear updated knowledge of such areas. SMC have the options of removing away those materials if the owner doesn’t remove it within 1-2 days. I will surely look into the matter in this regard”. Since the contact details of the ward masters in SMC wards are not available to the residents either on the SMC website or in any public handbook, the citizens often face such problem.
