SISTER NIRMALA OF MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY PASSES AWAY IN KOLKATA

Webdesk, TNI Kolkata, 23rd June, 2015: Sister Nirmala Joshi, the former superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, who succeeded Mother Teresa as the head of the Missionaries of Charity founded by the Nobel laureate, passed away to the heavenly abode today i.e. Tuesday morning. She was 81 years of age at the time of her demise. According to the sources, the veteran nun sister Nirmala was not keeping well for the past few days. Further, the source said that her cadaver would be brought to Mother House on tomorrow and the funeral will be held at around 4 p.m.  An official of Missionaries of Charity told the press that “Anyone who wants to pay respect can come to Mother House tomorrow”. Sister Nirmala was selected the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, On March 13, 1997, just six months before Mother Teresa’s passing away. Currently, the successor is Sister Mary Prema, who was elected to succeed Sister Nirmala during a general chapter held in Calcutta in April 2009. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled Sister Nirmala’s death. “Saddened by the passing of Sister Nirmala, who headed Missionaries of Charity after Mother Teresa. Kolkata and the world will miss her,” Ms. Banerjee said in a twitter statement.
